Indian Dance

Dance is a form of expression, an evolving language. Dance styles are closely tied to the culture from where they develop. Indian Dance comprises numerous styles of dance, generally classified as classical and folk. As with other aspects of Indian Culture, different forms of dance originated in different parts of India, developed according to the local traditions and also imbibed elements from other parts of the country.

Classical dance is an aesthetic culmination of movement, music, expression, literature, mythology, rhythm and devotion. This art helps us respond to, understand and integrate our external and internal realities. The traditional dance of India is known as the Indian Classical Dance

Classical Dance in India has developed a type of dance drama where the dancer enacts the story through hand gestures, body movements and abhinaya (facial expressions).Most of the classical dance styles enacts the Mythological stories from the ancient epic like Ramayana ,Mahabharata, Bhagvat Puran, Panchtantra etc. The costumes and jewellery are elaborate in these styles.

The different types of Indian Classical dance are Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Mohiniyattam, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Manipuri and Sattriya.
