Agnel Vidya Ankur

For over two decades, Vidya Ankur Basti Vikas Kendra has been actively engaged in community development in the Badarpur area. The center focuses on uplifting vulnerable populations, including school-going children, youth, and rag-picking children, with a current population of 439 individuals—269 children and 170 adults. Its mission is centered around education, vocational training, healthcare access, legal aid, and consistent community engagement.

The center offers a range of academic programs, including tuition classes for children, Bal Mandal (a children’s collective), and adult literacy classes aimed at promoting lifelong learning. Alongside academics, vocational courses are provided to enhance skill development and employment opportunities. These include basic English, computer literacy, typing, tailoring, and beauty culture.

In terms of health support, the center has provided medicines, wheelchairs, diapers for children and senior citizens, heating pads for winter, and steamers to counter air pollution. It has also facilitated regular health check-ups and extended support in serious cases, such as funding operations for children in need. The center also plays a vital role in legal and documentation assistance, helping community members obtain disability certificates, widow and senior citizen pensions, Aadhaar cards, and opening bank accounts for girls under the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana.

As part of its weekly outreach, the staff conducts field visits four times a week. During these visits, they identify needs and provide folded beds for senior citizens (in collaboration with NGOs), ration support to underprivileged families, school admission assistance for children who have dropped out, stationery and school bag distribution, clothing drives, and financial aid for higher education. Medical help is also extended to children requiring urgent care.

The center collaborates with several NGOs and institutions to expand its impact. These include Suraksha Welfare Trust for a women’s safety course, Joining Hands NGO for future collaboration, IGNOU for student internships, Jaguar Foundation and PHD Family Welfare Foundation for conducting health camps, and The George Institute for Global Health for community-based research. In addition, partnerships exist with government schools for internships supporting Class 11 students and children with special needs, Agewell Foundation for elderly care support, and Prayatna for awareness sessions and grassroots initiatives.

A wide range of awareness programs are regularly conducted on topics such as child protection (for both children and parents), life skills, substance abuse (including rallies), and cycles of violence. Public health awareness sessions are also held in coordination with municipal bodies. During the summer camp, a series of thematic sessions were conducted, covering child sexual abuse, cyber safety, mental health, relationships, and financial literacy. Various awareness and skill-building sessions were organized in collaboration with hospitals, NGOs, and vocational training institutes.

Through its integrated and holistic approach, Vidya Ankur Basti Vikas Kendra continues to play a critical role in promoting education, health, and social empowerment in the Badarpur community.
